Samuel Woolley Taylor was born February 5, 1907 in Provo, Utah, the son of Janet "Nettie" Maria Woolley Taylor and John W. Taylor, then a member of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and brother of Raymond Taylor. During the latter 1920s, Samuel enrolled in Brigham Young University in Provo to study journalism. During this time he wrote a weekly column in BYU's Y News entitled "Taylored Topics."
